About this event

3-4 hours/session

Unlike infrared spectroscopy, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is used in many fields, not just the food industry, because it can acquire chemical information even from objects that contain a lot of moisture content. As an example, in Okinawa, it is used to analyse the sugar content in sugarcane, mango, etc; moisture content in cereals such as rice, wheat, etc; and oil in beans.  Chemometrics is a coined word derived by combining chemistry (Chem) and metrics (metrics). Chemometrics is a research field related to analyzing experimental data, including signal processing, quantitative and qualitative analysis. Meanwhile, the development of various experimental data such as regression analysis, pattern recognition, deep learning, and data fusion is in progress. It is now being used in many fields of studies because of its possibility to acquire many and complex data due to available sophisticated analytical instruments. It is therefore an essential analytical technique for near-infrared spectroscopy.

The seminar topic is “Near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics in agriculture and food”. This seminar includes 2 sessions. The first session targets audience who are students (i.e., undergraduate and postgraduate) and beginners by Prof. Dr. Y. Ozaki and National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) group. The second session is short lectures from world-famous guest speakers from Spain, Italy, Austria, and Thailand, specialists in the field. The target is researchers who are interested in seeing more global-level use of NIR spectroscopy and chemometrics in agriculture and food.

Session 1: Fri, January 20, 2023, 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM UTC+9 (Basic Seminar: For students and beginners)

Session 2: Sat, January 21, 2023, 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM UTC+9 (International Seminar: For researchers)
